Skin care tips for dry winter is the hot topic in cold winter as many people will face problems with respect to their skin. Low humid wind is the main reason for dry skin in winter as it will deplete the lipid layer beneath the skin which is meant for maintaining the humidity of skin. The condition will get worse when it results to cracking, flaking and inflammation. So read on to know more about how the human skin is structured and how to prevent dry skin with simple winter skin care tips.
Human skin can be divided mainly into two layers Epidermis and Dermis where Epidermis is the outer most layer and Dermis lies beneath the Epidermis. Epidermis is further divided into many sub layers where Stratum corneum is the top layer. This Stratum corneum contains dead cells which act as a barrier between the inner living skin tissues and the external environment. The cells of Stratum corneum contains protein called keratin which plays a very important role in providing elasticity for skin and prevents evaporation of water from the inner skin tissues.
Along with that, human skin contains sebaceous glands which will secrete Sebum which acts as natural lubricator for Epidermis and prevents evaporation of water from the inner skin tissues. But this Sebum is fragile and will get deprived easily from the external changes. So, during winter season this lipid will get destroyed due to harsh cold wind and the inner skin tissues starts to loose water in the form of evaporation. Thus your skin will get dry and starts itching. So let us look at some skin care tips for winter to avoid the dry skin.
1. Moisturize more to avoid dry skin
Best method to avoid dry skin during winter is to moisturize your skin. It is better to choose the moisturizers which are oil based, because it creates protective layer on the skin and prevents the evaporation of water from the inner skin tissues. Moisturizers which come in the form of ointments contain more oil compared to lotions and creams. Again in oil based moisturizers, you need to choose the one which are based on ‘Non-Clogging’ oils like almond oil, avocado oil and primrose oil. The ‘Clogging’ oils like Butter and Shea oil will block the skin pores which might cause some side effects. Other option is to choose the lotions which have got ‘Humectants’ like Sorbitol, Glycerine and Alpha Hydroxy Acid as they will attract the moisture for your skin.
2. Hydrate more to prevent dry skin
Since winter air is dry it is not just enough to prevent evaporation of water from skin using moisturizers, but you should also provide sufficient water for the skin tissues from inside. Drink more and more water during winter to keep your skin and health in good condition.
3. Stop bathing in hot water
People love to take bath in hot water during winter as they feel it good whereas skin hates the same. The reason is that, the intense heat will destroy the lipid layer of the skin, exposing your inner skin tissues to the cold wind which leads to dry skin. So try to make a habit to use only Luke warm water for bathing during winter and also avoid long duration bath to avoid dry skin during winter.
4. Stop licking chapped lips
Common problem people face during winter is chapped lips. Lips have got very thin oil film on the surface to prevent the loss of moisture which will be stripped off by the dry air resulting in chapped lips. When it is licked, it provides temporary dampness but again it removes the rest of the oil content from the surface of the lips. Also, note that some of the enzymes present in saliva which are specific to digestion will cause irritation for the lips. So stop licking chapped lips and try to use the lip balm to prevent the chapped lips. Drink adequate water and also try to use the products containing Lanolin which even repairs the cracked lips.
